No tornadoes, no sneak attacks, no emergency. Just a malfunctioning alarm at 1:30 in the morning.

SPECIAL EDITION: TORNADO SIREN MALFUNCTION
On March 20, 2008 at 1:08 a.m., the tornado siren located at 5420 Main
Street activated due to an as yet undetermined cause. This malfunction
was a rare occurrence and at no point during the incident was the threat
of severe weather imminent. Staff is currently working with the
supplier of the siren to pinpoint the cause of the malfunction and take
the appropriate corrective action.
The Village apologizes for the inconvenience caused by this
malfunctioning tornado siren and please rest assured that corrective
action is being taken to ensure that this does not happen again.
Although this equipment malfunction in the early morning hours was
regrettable, the Village would like all residents to remember that the
sirens are only officially activated during a storm when a tornado or
funnel cloud has been spotted. Please make sure that your family is
aware of where to seek shelter during a storm. The best place is always
a basement or a room with no windows. Residents should also be aware
that the sirens will NOT transmit an All Clear signal.
The Downers Grove Police Department resumed testing of the Village's
emergency sirens during the first week of March. Sirens will be tested
on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. through October.
